Fabrications made of hollow sections according to EN 10210 and EN 10219 are always special challenges in structural and mechanical engineering. Amongst others, one reason for this is that the EN 1993-1-8 does not give the design formulae for the connections of hollow sections in the accustomed component method known from open sections.
Therefore, the designer cannot use the advantages of the component method, like the better description of the connection´s behaviour and the higher degree of utilization of the connection. Additionally, the clearly arranged optimization potential of the connection’s characteristic, which is provided by the component method, cannot be used for hollow sections to the same extent.
From the very beginning, CIDECT, a well-respected organization founded more than 50 years ago to stimulate research and development on hollow sections and their applications, has contributed largely and purposively to the development of the design formulae of the Eurocode.
At this year’s general assembly in Munich, CIDECT decided to make the results of a research project public, which worked on the conversion of the existing design formulae for connections of hollow sections into the component method.
Subsequently, future research activities on design formulae for connections of hollow sections shall use the component method as a basis. Thereby CIDECT is going to make a new big contribution to support and to develop this EN-standard, which became highly essential for structural engineering and in the near future CIDECT will offer a simplification of the work and an expansion of the tool-kit to the user of this standard.
Application, research and education shall be given additional impetus which will make the advantages of hollow sections more favourable in support of a modern and sustainable design.
